How to Show Up in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity Answers

The big three AI engines build answers in different ways, and that changes what it takes to appear in each one. A practical guide to all three.

Business owners tend to talk about "AI" as one thing, but the three engines your customers actually use are built differently, and those differences decide how you get into their answers. What works fastest on Perplexity works slowest on ChatGPT. What Gemini leans on hardest, the others barely touch. Here's how each one assembles an answer about you, and what that means for where you spend effort.

Perplexity: live search, always cited

Perplexity is the most transparent of the three. Every answer starts with a live web search, and every claim links back to a source you can see. That makes it the engine where your work pays off quickest: change what the top sources say about you, and the answers change within days, not months.

It also tells you exactly what to fix. Ask Perplexity about your business and your category, then read the citations. Those pages, the review sites, directories, and articles it pulled from, are your actual battleground. If a stale directory listing is being cited, updating it moves the needle directly. If a competitor's comparison page is the source of record for your category, that's a page you need to be present on, or you need a better one to exist.

Gemini: welded to Google's index

Gemini draws on Google's infrastructure, which means it inherits Google's picture of your business, and the single biggest input for a local business is your Google Business Profile. Categories, services, hours, photos, posts, and above all reviews: Gemini treats this data as close to ground truth.

So the Gemini playbook is mostly the Google playbook, executed properly. Fill out every field of your profile, not just the required ones. Keep hours current, including holidays. Answer reviews, because responses are signal too. And keep your website consistent with the profile, since disagreement between the two is the kind of thing that quietly costs you a recommendation. If you've historically half-maintained your Business Profile, Gemini is the reason to stop.

ChatGPT: memory plus browsing

ChatGPT is the trickiest, because it blends two sources. Its training data, a snapshot of the web that may be months or years old, and live browsing when a question calls for current facts. The blend means your history follows you. If the web said outdated things about you for years, traces of that can linger in answers even after you've cleaned up, until browsing surfaces fresher sources that override it.

The practical response is patience plus pressure. You can't edit a training snapshot, but you can make the current web so consistent that any live lookup contradicts the stale memory. Well-structured pages on your own site, current listings on the platforms that rank for your name, and recent coverage all give the browsing pass something better to find. Over time, better sources win.

The common ground

Underneath the differences, all three engines are doing the same thing: reading the public record and compressing it. Which means the shared checklist matters more than any engine-specific trick. Make your website state facts plainly. Keep your details identical everywhere. Accumulate recent reviews. Earn mentions from sources engines already trust.

Do that, and the differences become tailwinds instead of chores. Perplexity rewards you first, Gemini follows as your profile strengthens, and ChatGPT comes around as fresh sources pile up.

A simple monthly habit

Once a month, ask all three engines the same two questions: "tell me about [your business]" and "best [what you do] in [your area]." Note what each says, what each gets wrong, and who else gets named. Fifteen minutes, three tools, and you'll know more about your AI visibility than most of your competitors know about theirs. The engines are already answering these questions for your customers every day. You should at least be in the room to hear what they say.
